The Sacagawea one dollar coin was first minted by the United
States Mint in 2000. The obverse of the coin, designed by Glenna Goodacre, depicts a Shoshone Indian woman named Sacagawea, a guide and member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, carrying her son Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. The reverse side of the Sacagawea one dollar coin depicts a soaring eagle in flight surrounded by seventeen stars, each star representing each state of the Union that existed during that time period.
