The First U.S. Five Dollar Gold Coin
The U.S. five Dollar half eagle gold coin was the first gold coin minted in the United States. The first half eagle gold coin was the first denomination produced in 1795 and is referred to as a Draped Bust/Small Eagle gold coin type. The coins design was furnished by Robert Scot. The obverse of this first U.S. gold coin featured a depiction Liberty wearing a soft cap. The reverse side of the coin depicts an eagle perched on a branch. The small eagle on the coins reverse immediately became unpopular with the general public being characterized by many as to scrawny looking in appearance.
