The Three Dollar U.S. Gold Coin
The U.S. three dollar gold coin was
issued from 1854 to 1889. The coins three dollar value was related to
U.S. postal system. During this time period a first class postage stamp
was worth three cents and the postage stamps were frequently sold in
sheets of one hundred stamps. This three dollar coin was exactly enough
money for an individual to purchase a sheet of stamps. The coin was
minted in small quantities, and was never widely circulated. The most
valuable U.S. $3 gold coin of this series is the scarce 1870-S three
dollar gold coin.
