The U.S. Ten Dollar Gold Coin (1795-1933)
The first U.S. ten dollar gold coins began being produced after The Act of April 2, 1792 authorized a U.S. Mint in Philadelphia to mint a gold $10 eagle coin with a weight of 270 grains of gold. These coins are referred to by many coin collectors and investors as an eagle gold coin. U.S. gold coins were minted featuring various depictions of the eagle and the general public began referring to them as eagle coins. The twenty dollar coin is referred to as a double eagle, the ten dollar coin as an eagle, the five dollar coin as a half eagle and the two fifty gold coin as a quarter eagle.
