The U.S. One Dollar Gold Coin
The U.S. gold dollar coin minted from 1849 to 1889, was the smallest denomination of gold coins ever minted in the United States.

Originally there were no plans for the production of a U.S. gold one dollar coin. In the late 1840s the United States Congress was looking to expand the use of gold by the general public for day to day business use. There were three types of the one dollar gold coin minted during this time span. The Liberty Head type coin minted from 1849-1854, the Indian Head type minted from 1854-1856 and the Large Head type minted from 1856-1889.
