United States Barber Dimes
The first U.S. Barber dimes (ten cent coin), were minted at the U.S. Philadelphia Mint on Jan. 2, 1892. The coins obverse was designed by Charles E. Barber and the coins reverse was designed by James B. Longacre. These coins are 17.9 millimeters in diameter, weigh 2.5 grams and the coins metal content contains 90% pure silver and 10% copper.
The Rare 1894-S Barber Dime
The 1894-S U.S. Barber Dime is one of the most valuable coins ever produced by the United States Mint with twenty four coins being minted and only nine accounted for. In the early part of 1894, twenty four proof coins of the Barber series dimes were minted by the San Francisco Mint. One theory on why such a small number of these coins were produced is that the superintendent of the San Francisco Mint had them minted as gifts for important banker associates.
