The U.S. large cent was one of the first coins struck at the U.S. Mint. This large copper coin was minted from 1793 to 1857, inclusive, with the exception of the year 1815, when a fire forced the closing of the U.S. Mint. In 1857, the Large Cent was replaced by the smaller flying eagle cent, a much more user friendly but less impressive coin.
